The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his recent reference to the historic “Operation Wetie” violence, describing the comment as disgraceful and capable of inciting unrest.
Makinde made the statement during a summit of opposition political leaders, where he warned against the dangers of a one-party state and urged political actors to remember the lessons of history.
Reacting to the comment, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said it was irresponsible for a sitting governor and chief security officer of his state to make such remarks. He argued that public office holders must speak with restraint and avoid statements that could be interpreted as encouraging violence.

The phrase “Operation Wetie” refers to a violent period in the old Western Region during the mid-1960s, when political opponents and properties were attacked amid disputed elections. The crisis remains one of the darkest chapters in South-West political history.
Despite criticism from the ruling party, African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Ladan Salihu defended Makinde, saying the governor was merely issuing a warning based on historical realities and present national tensions.
Salihu said worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and governance concerns were danger signals that leaders should address urgently to avoid future instability.
The exchange highlights growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties increasingly warning against dominance by a single political bloc.
