Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has commenced filing his defence documents in the ongoing terrorism case against him at the Federal High Court in Abuja, ending months of refusal to engage in the trial process.
Justice James Omotosho ordered the temporary relocation of the court’s registry to the courtroom to enable Kanu, who is in custody, to comply with the directive to open his defence. The defendant is currently submitting the documents under judicial supervision.
Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, counsel to the Federal Government, informed the court that he would receive the defence processes in the courtroom and file responses accordingly.
Proceedings were stood down for one hour to allow the filing to continue uninterrupted.
Kanu had previously declined to present his defence, maintaining that the prosecution must first identify the specific terrorism legislation under which he is charged.
The trial continues.
