THE MAN WHO SAID HE MADE OTTI GOVERNOR NOW WANTS HIS JOB: Ceekay Igara Enters Abia 2027 Race, Challenges Incumbent Within Labour Party as Court Battle Over Party’s Soul Looms

The man who, by his own account, held the door open for Alex Otti to become Governor of Abia State now wants to walk through that door himself.

Hon. Ceekay Igara, the Labour Party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-East zone, has officially purchased his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest the Abia State governorship election in 2027 under the LP banner setting up what could become the most consequential intra-party battle in the state’s recent political history.

Igara, widely known in LP circles as the “Chairman of Chairmen,” served as the Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party during its most turbulent years, and is described by allies as one of the original architects of the party’s grassroots structure that eventually produced the Otti administration. His supporters claim that without his organisational tenacity and resistance to financial inducements from rival political forces, the LP would never have gained its current dominance in Abia.

“It was Ceekay Igara who made it possible for Alex Otti to become Governor today, When powerful interests allegedly conspired to block Otti’s path, it was Igara who stood as his shield, held the fort, and rejected every attempt to sell out the mandate.” – a statement credited to his camp stated.

That loyalty, his supporters now argue, was never adequately recognised and Igara has since concluded that course correction, not continuity, is what Abia needs.

THE COURT BATTLE BEHIND THE CANDIDACY

But Igara’s governorship declaration cannot be read in isolation from a deeper, more explosive conflict tearing through the Labour Party at the national level one in which he is a principal combatant.

Igara is a firm loyalist of LP National Chairman Barr. Julius Abure. Together with Abure’s faction, he is party to active court cases challenging the legitimacy of Nenadi Usman and her team, who allegedly were installed as the LP’s national leadership with the backing of Governor Otti. The Abure camp maintains that the Usman faction represents an illegal takeover of the party, engineered by a governor seeking to control the very structure that brought him to power.

The cases, currently working their way through the courts, strike at the very heart of who controls the Labour Party and by extension, who has the authority to conduct primaries, issue candidate forms, and determine who flies the LP flag in Abia’s 2027 governorship election.

This is not a sideshow. It is the main event.

If the courts uphold Abure’s leadership as the legitimate authority of the Labour Party, Igara’s candidacy gains enormous institutional muscle and Otti’s ability to influence or control the LP primary process in Abia could be severely curtailed. If, however, the Nenadi Usman faction is affirmed, Otti’s grip on the party machinery tightens, and Igara’s path to the primary let alone the governorship becomes significantly narrower.

In short, the fate of both men may be decided not on the campaign trail, but inside a Nigerian courtroom.

THE POLITICAL CASE AGAINST OTTI

Beyond the legal battlefield, Igara’s entry into the race is built on a pointed critique of the administration he helped birth. His camp flags what it describes as “increasing political intolerance and elitist governance” under Otti, and points to growing discontent from Aba’s trading communities to Umuahia’s civil servant population. Igara is positioning himself as the accessible alternative to a governor his allies now describe as “unreachable.”

His camp has branded the candidacy around what it calls the “David of Abia” movement framing the contest as a battle of integrity against institutional high-handedness, and Igara as the underdog with inside knowledge of exactly how the machinery works.

The political symbolism of the challenge is not lost on observers. Igara is not a defector from another party or an outsider seeking to crash the LP’s internal order he is a co-founder of the Abia LP structure now turning that structure against the man he helped install.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Three battles are now converging simultaneously: the courtroom war over LP’s legitimate national leadership, the intra-party primary contest between Igara and Otti, and the wider question of whether the Labour Party in Abia can survive this level of internal fracture ahead of a general election.

Whether the LP’s national leadership crisis is resolved in Abure’s favour or Usman’s, whether Igara secures a free and fair primary, and whether Otti’s administration can withstand the optics of being challenged by the very man who built his political hous, all three questions now hang in the balance.

As of press time Governor Alex Otti’s camp is yet to respond to the emergence of Ceekay in the ring.
