Rt Hon. Chinedu Orji

Former Speaker of the 7th Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orji made the declaration in Umuahia while addressing a large crowd of supporters who paid him a Good Friday visit, using the opportunity to signal what many observers describe as a political comeback following his outing in the 2023 general elections.

The former Speaker, who presided over the Abia State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023, recalled his time leading the legislature, highlighting what he described as efforts to stabilize the Assembly and support governance during a politically tense period in the state. His tenure, however, was not without controversy, as critics often accused the Assembly under his leadership of lacking independence from the executive arm.

Despite the criticisms, Orji maintained a strong political structure across Ikwuano and Umuahia, which played a significant role in his decision to seek higher office after leaving the state legislature.

In the 2023 general elections, Orji contested for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat but was defeated in a race that reflected the shifting political dynamics in Abia State, particularly with the rise of opposition movements and changing voter sentiments. His loss was widely seen as part of a broader political upset that reshaped the state’s power structure.

Speaking to supporters, Orji said his decision to run again in 2027 was driven by a renewed commitment to serve the people and provide effective representation at the federal level.

“I am stepping forward once again because I believe I still have a lot to offer our people. The experience I have gained over the years, both as a legislator and as Speaker, has prepared me for greater service,” he said.

He emphasized the need for stronger representation for Ikwuano/Umuahia at the National Assembly, promising to focus on infrastructure, youth empowerment, and attracting federal presence to the constituency.

Political observers note that his return bid under the APC signals a strategic realignment, especially in a state where party loyalties and alliances continue to evolve ahead of 2027.

While supporters at the event expressed optimism about his chances, analysts say Orji’s path to victory may depend on how effectively he reconnects with grassroots voters and navigates the increasingly competitive political landscape in Abia.

His declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched contest in the coming election cycle.
