Nigerian medical scientists have raised fresh concerns over the possible spread of Ebola into the country following recent outbreaks reported in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The warning was issued by the Academy of Medical Sciences, Nigeria, which urged the Federal Government to immediately strengthen border surveillance systems, activate emergency response mechanisms, and place health institutions nationwide on high alert.
According to the experts, increased regional travel, trade, and human movement across African borders have heightened the risk of cross-border transmission into Nigeria. The Academy warned that the country’s airports, seaports, and land borders remain vulnerable if urgent preventive actions are not taken.
In a public health advisory signed by the Chairman of the Rapid Response Committee, Prof. Obinna Onwujekwe, and the Academy President, Emeritus Prof. Osato Giwa-Osagie, the scientists stressed that Nigeria must not become complacent because of its successful containment of Ebola in 2014.
The experts described Ebola as a highly dangerous viral hemorrhagic disease capable of causing severe health, economic, and social disruptions if not rapidly controlled. They called for the immediate deployment of enhanced screening systems for travelers arriving from affected regions.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has already intensified nationwide surveillance efforts to prevent any possible outbreak. The agency disclosed that it has strengthened laboratory preparedness, reinforced infection prevention measures in hospitals, and increased public awareness campaigns across the country.
Health experts also emphasized the need for rapid response teams, improved disease monitoring technology, and stronger collaboration between health agencies and border authorities. They warned that Nigeria’s porous borders remain a major challenge in controlling transnational health threats and other security risks.
Nigeria previously earned international praise for successfully containing the Ebola outbreak in 2014 through aggressive contact tracing, surveillance, and swift isolation measures after the virus entered the country through an infected traveler.
As fears grow across parts of Africa over renewed Ebola outbreaks, scientists insist that early preparedness and strict border monitoring remain Nigeria’s best defense against another public health crisis.
