Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the close of sales for the party’s presidential nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general election.

The development signals a major political shift within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as the NDC intensifies preparations for the next presidential contest. Party insiders disclosed that Obi was the only aspirant who successfully obtained the presidential nomination forms before the deadline expired.

According to the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC has extended the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective offices, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly positions, until May 24, 2026. However, the presidential application window has officially closed.

The party also announced that screening and pre-qualification interviews for aspirants would commence immediately, with the process expected to run through May 26. Collection and submission of nomination forms for cleared candidates are also scheduled within the same period.

Obi’s emergence as the sole presidential hopeful further strengthens speculation that the NDC is positioning itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 election. In recent weeks, discussions surrounding coalition politics and possible alignments among opposition figures have continued to dominate Nigeria’s political scene.

Political observers believe the move could reshape opposition dynamics, especially as parties seek stronger alliances capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

The NDC has maintained that no further extension would be granted for aspirants and urged all candidates seeking other elective offices to comply strictly with the party’s guidelines and timetable.
