National Concord can now confirm that ECOWAS has reacted strongly to Sunday’s attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin.
According to a statement issued by the ECOWAS Commission, the regional bloc expressed “consternation” over the plot and condemned it as an unconstitutional act that undermines the will of the Beninese people. The Commission urged full adherence to Benin’s constitution and commended the government and the Republican Army for moving swiftly to contain the situation.
ECOWAS further warned that the masterminds of the coup will be held individually and collectively responsible for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
The statement also emphasized that ECOWAS is prepared to support Benin “in all forms necessary,” including the possible deployment of its regional standby force, to safeguard the country’s constitutional order and territorial integrity.
