The crisis rocking Enyimba Football Club deepened on Monday as the club’s Sporting Director, Daniel Eke, reportedly stormed the team’s training ground in Aba accompanied by officers of the Rapid Response Squad, leading to the disruption of the team’s training session.
The development occurred barely 24 hours after the nine-time Nigerian champions suffered a 1–0 home defeat to newly promoted Inter Lagos in their Matchday Four Nigeria Premier Football League fixture.
Reports from the training ground said some club officials were taken away from the facility during the incident, while players, members of the technical crew and other officials were subsequently seen at Aba North police station as efforts were reportedly made to resolve the unfolding crisis.
Multiple reports confirmed that the presence of the security operatives brought Monday’s training session to an abrupt halt, although the circumstances surrounding their deployment and the identities of those allegedly taken to the police station remained unclear as of press time.
A source within the club’s media team, however, told National Concord that Eke was allegedly assaulted following Sunday’s defeat to Inter Lagos, claiming that he was beaten and his clothes torn.
The source alleged that the confrontation was linked to Eke’s reaction to the goal scored by Ezekiel Moses, which reportedly did not go down well with some officials of the club.
The allegation could not be independently verified as of press time.
Video clips circulating online also showed Enyimba Chairman and former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo, at Aba north police station alongside a coaster bus reportedly carrying members of the club staff and team players.
The incident has further heightened concerns about the leadership crisis that has plagued the Aba-based club in recent months.
Long-running power struggle
The latest confrontation is coming against the backdrop of previous dispute over the authority and status of Eke within the Enyimba management structure.
National Concord had earlier reported a disagreement between Kanu and Eke after the latter rejected his reported reassignment to the position of Chief Scouting Officer.
Eke maintained that he remained the club’s substantive Sporting Director, arguing that he was appointed to the position by the Abia State Government and that only the appointing authority could alter or terminate his appointment.
The dispute had previously exposed tensions between the club’s management and the Abia State Ministry of Sports, with questions arising over the respective powers of the club chairman and the state government in the administration of Enyimba.
The latest development suggests that the disagreement may have moved beyond administrative differences into an increasingly confrontational phase.
Fresh allegations over Kanu’s position
The crisis was further fuelled by a recent report by one Futball Galore, based in UK, which alleged that the Abia State Commissioner for Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba, was mounting pressure on Kanu and seeking to replace him with Eke in a larger management restructuring.
The publication also alleged that Eke was seeking changes to the technical structure of the club and had expressed interest in replacing head coach Emmanuel Deutsch.
Neither the commissioner nor the Abia State Government had publicly confirmed the alleged plan as of press time.
The allegations have nonetheless added another dimension to the increasingly public disagreement over the control and direction of the club.
Coach had earlier warned of distractions
The latest confrontation also comes days after Enyimba head coach, Emmanuel Deutsch, publicly expressed concern about what he described as distractions surrounding the club.
Speaking ahead of the team’s Matchday Three encounter with Doma United, Deutsch urged Abia and Enyimba supporters to resist developments capable of disrupting the team.
The coach said developments being discussed in the media and online could affect the mentality of his players.
“There’s a chairman there. You can cooperate with him and work,” Deutsch said, while appealing to supporters to stand against what he described as distractions and “selfish interests” around the club.
Deutsch also praised Kanu for his efforts towards the welfare of the players and recalled Enyimba’s two CAF Champions League triumphs, stressing the importance of discipline in rebuilding the club.
Relegation fears grow
The worsening administrative crisis comes at a particularly difficult time for the People’s Elephant on the pitch.
Enyimba have lost their opening three league matches and are currently struggling near the bottom of the NPFL table. The club’s 1–0 defeat to Inter Lagos on September 20 was officially recorded as their Matchday Four fixture.
The club is now scheduled to face another Lagos side, Sporting Lagos, at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Wednesday, September 23.
The timing of the latest crisis has heightened concerns among supporters, with calls growing for the relevant authorities to intervene and prevent the off-field dispute from further affecting the team’s campaign.
Enyimba, a two-time CAF Champions League winner, is one of Nigeria’s most decorated football clubs and remains a major symbol of Abia’s sporting identity.
However, with the team struggling for results and administrative disagreements increasingly playing out in public, supporters are becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of the club.
As of press time, neither Enyimba Football Club nor the Abia State Government had issued an official statement explaining Monday’s incident or clarifying the circumstances surrounding the reported police intervention.
