Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to upgrade the Umuahia Township Stadium to meet the immediate needs of Abia Warriors Football Club. He also revealed a long-term vision for a modern “Stadium City” in Umuahia, aimed at transforming the state’s sports infrastructure.
Governor Otti made the announcement during a visit by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, at the Government House. He said approval has been given for the immediate upgrade of the township stadium, while the ambitious Stadium City project will feature an entertainment village, plazas, a conference center, and residential apartments. According to Otti, land has already been acquired, and design work is underway.

NFF President Gusau commended the Governor’s commitment to sports development, describing Abia as a “home of football” in Nigeria. He praised Enyimba FC’s historic continental success and urged the state to prioritize the stadium’s renovation, pledging technical support from the NFF. He also noted that under Otti’s leadership, Abia Warriors has emerged as one of Nigeria’s top clubs.

Also speaking, Rev. Dr. Obioma Onyeaghala, Chairman of the Abia State Football Association, lauded Governor Otti for clearing salary arrears at the state teaching hospital and urged continued focus on people-centered governance. The event was attended by key dignitaries, including the state’s Youth and Sports Commissioner, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, and the Chairman of Abia Warriors FC.
