Iran has denied allegations that it attacked a South Korean cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, as U.S. President Donald Trump warned that military strikes against Tehran could resume if ongoing negotiations fail.
Iranian officials rejected reports linking Tehran to an incident involving the Panama-flagged cargo vessel HMM Namu, insisting that the country had no involvement in any attack on commercial shipping in the strategic waterway.
The denial came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following renewed confrontations involving U.S. naval forces and Iranian military units near the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump, while addressing reporters in Washington, warned that the United States could launch stronger military action if Iran refuses to quickly reach an agreement with Washington. He reportedly stated that future attacks would be “a lot harder” if diplomatic efforts collapse.
The warning followed reports that three U.S. Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz came under missile, drone, and fast-boat attacks allegedly carried out by Iranian forces. American officials said the warships were not damaged and that U.S. forces responded with “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian launch facilities and ports near the waterway.
Iran, however, accused the United States of violating an existing ceasefire arrangement and claimed its military actions were defensive responses to American operations in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, with ongoing hostilities already disrupting maritime traffic, global energy supply chains, and shipping operations. Reports indicate that vessel movement through the strait has significantly declined amid fears of further escalation.
International observers have expressed concern that continued clashes between Iran and the United States could trigger wider instability across the Middle East and further affect global oil prices and international trade.
Despite the growing tensions, both Washington and Tehran have indicated that diplomatic discussions are still ongoing, although uncertainty remains over whether a lasting agreement can be reached.
