Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as an opportunity for national healing, unity, and fairness.
The NDC adopted the zoning arrangement during its national convention held in Abuja, where delegates resolved that the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election would emerge from the South and serve a single four-year term before power rotates back to the North in 2031.
Speaking at the convention, Kwankwaso said the decision reflected the principles of equity and federal character, stressing that Southern Nigeria should be allowed to complete its turn in producing the country’s leadership.
“It is therefore with great sense of unity and solidarity that, as a loyal party member, I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket of the NDC to the South,” Kwankwaso said during his address to delegates in Abuja.
The former presidential candidate added that the arrangement represents “a true opportunity for national healing” and pledged that members of his political movement would abide by the party’s agreement to ensure fairness and inclusiveness.
Kwankwaso also criticised what he described as poor leadership in the country, arguing that Nigeria faces growing economic hardship, insecurity, and political instability that require visionary and inclusive governance.

Political observers believe the zoning decision significantly strengthens the chances of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi emerging as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso, who recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had reportedly shown interest in the party’s presidential ticket before the zoning arrangement was announced.
The convention also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to rotational leadership, constitutional governance, and national inclusion as opposition parties intensify coalition efforts ahead of the next general election.
The latest development has further reshaped opposition politics in Nigeria, with analysts predicting possible strategic alliances between major political figures within the emerging coalition movement.
