Nigeria Democratic Congress

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term as part of its power-sharing arrangement ahead of the next general elections.

The decision was reached during the party’s maiden national convention held at the Los Angeles Event Centre in Abuja on Saturday. Party delegates also resolved that the presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the expiration of the proposed single term.

According to resolutions adopted at the convention, the zoning arrangement was based on the principles of equity, inclusiveness, and national balance between the North and South.

The motion for the zoning arrangement was moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Afam Victor Ogene, and was unanimously adopted by delegates at the convention.

The development is widely seen as strengthening the chances of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and other southern aspirants seeking to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate in 2027.

The convention was attended by prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi, former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson.

Addressing delegates, Obi said the opposition coalition was determined to rescue Nigeria from insecurity, poverty, and what he described as failed leadership. He also warned against attempts to weaken opposition politics and turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

Kwankwaso, who backed the zoning arrangement, described the decision as a courageous move capable of promoting national healing, fairness, and inclusion.

The NDC has recently witnessed an influx of politicians defecting from other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as opposition leaders intensify coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts believe the zoning arrangement could significantly reshape opposition dynamics and coalition negotiations in the months ahead, especially amid growing speculation over a possible Obi-Kwankwaso alliance for the 2027 presidential race.
