NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Unsafe Food, Pushes Nationwide Safety Reforms

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns over the growing threat posed by unsafe food in Nigeria, calling for comprehensive reforms to strengthen food safety systems across the country.

The agency warned that unsafe food remains a major public health burden, contributing to foodborne illnesses, economic losses, reduced productivity and, in some cases, loss of lives. According to the agency, food safety risks can occur at every stage of the supply chain, including production, processing, transportation, storage, distribution and consumption. It noted that all stakeholders have critical roles to play in ensuring that food products remain safe from farm to table. (NAFDAC)

NAFDAC called for the adoption of science-based regulations, improved food safety education, responsible manufacturing practices and stronger collaboration among relevant stakeholders. The agency also advocated adherence to Good Agricultural Practices, Good Hygiene Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices and internationally recognised food safety systems to improve standards nationwide. The agency said strengthening regulatory systems, surveillance mechanisms, laboratory capacity and public awareness campaigns would be essential in addressing food safety challenges and building confidence in Nigeria’s food system. NAFDAC further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers through stronger regulatory oversight and preventive approaches aimed at detecting and managing food-related risks before they escalate into public health emergencies. (NAFDAC)
