The Nigerian football community converged in Delta State as top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) arrived in Asaba to honour Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi. The visit formed part of funeral rites organised for the late patriarch, whose passing sparked widespread sympathy across Nigeria’s sporting circles.

A delegation led by the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, met with Ndidi in the Delta State capital ahead of the burial ceremony held in Umunede. The officials presented a formal condolence letter to the midfielder, conveying the collective grief of the Nigerian football fraternity over the tragic loss. 

Other members of the delegation included NFF Executive Committee member Rt. Hon. Nse Essien, Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Hon. Godwin Adode, and the NFF Director of Media and Communications, Dr. Ademola Olajire, alongside other state football board members. Their presence underscored the deep respect for Ndidi’s contributions to Nigerian football and the federation’s solidarity with him during the mourning period. 

The funeral ceremonies drew dignitaries, sports administrators, and community leaders who joined family members and associates to pay their last respects. The turnout highlighted the emotional connection between Ndidi and the national football establishment, reflecting his standing as one of Nigeria’s most influential footballers of his generation.

Sunday Ndidi reportedly died in a tragic road accident in Umunede, Delta State, leaving behind a legacy remembered for discipline and strong family values. His death came shortly after his son played a key role in Nigeria’s successful outing at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles secured a third-place finish. 

Following the tragic incident, tributes poured in from across the country, including messages of condolence from political leaders, football stakeholders, and international sports organisations. Many described the late Sunday Ndidi as a guiding figure who played a crucial role in shaping the footballer’s professional and personal life.Ndidi, widely regarded as a dependable midfield anchor for both club and country, has continued to receive public support as he navigates the emotional loss.
