The Federal High Court in Abuja has received confirmation from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is medically fit to stand trial.

The confirmation follows a comprehensive health evaluation conducted by a medical panel constituted by the NMA President in compliance with an earlier court order.

Justice James Omotosho had, two weeks ago, directed the NMA to carry out an independent medical assessment after receiving conflicting health reports from the prosecution and defence teams.

At Thursday’s hearing, the prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), presented the panel’s report, which indicated that Kanu’s condition is not life-threatening. With no objections from either side, Justice Omotosho ruled that the trial would proceed as scheduled.

The court further granted Kanu six consecutive days, beginning October 23, to present and conclude his defence.

In a separate ruling, Justice Omotosho approved a request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), for a private consultation between Kanu and his legal team. The meeting, set for October 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, will hold in the courtroom under restricted access, with only Kanu and his lawyers present.
