Digital financial services provider OPay has unveiled two new security features, Emergency Lock and Safety PIN, aimed at strengthening the protection of users’ accounts and funds amid growing concerns over fraud, theft and unauthorized transactions.
The company said the newly introduced tools are designed to give customers greater control over their accounts, particularly during emergencies such as phone theft, coercion or suspected unauthorized access.
The Emergency Lock feature allows users to instantly freeze transactions on their accounts, preventing debits and other activities that could expose their funds to fraud. Once activated, the account remains locked until the user completes the required verification process to regain access.
OPay’s new Safety PIN feature provides an additional layer of protection by enabling users to create a separate security code that can be used in sensitive situations. The feature is intended to help customers secure their funds and prevent unauthorized transfers even when they are under pressure or unable to access their devices normally.
The company explained that the new measures form part of its broader commitment to enhancing customer security and staying ahead of evolving financial threats in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital payments ecosystem.
As digital banking adoption continues to grow, incidents involving stolen devices, account compromises and fraudulent transactions have raised concerns among users and regulators. Industry stakeholders have increasingly emphasized the need for stronger authentication mechanisms and improved customer safeguards.
OPay said customers are encouraged to activate the new features and familiarize themselves with their functions to ensure they can respond quickly in emergency situations. The company added that protecting users’ funds and personal information remains a top priority and that it will continue investing in technologies that improve the security and reliability of its services.
