The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially scheduled its National Convention for March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja, signalling a key step toward electing new leaders for the party’s top organs, including the National Working Committee (NWC). The decision was made at the party’s 105th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Monday in the nation’s capital.

In a communique issued after extensive deliberations, the NEC reaffirmed the authority and legitimacy of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu as Secretary, as the sole lawful administrative body acting in place of a fully elected NWC until the convention is held. The announcement follows recent judicial developments that have affirmed the committee’s leadership.

To pave the way for a transparent and credible convention, the NEC also approved a detailed schedule for party congresses nationwide. Ward and Local Government Congresses are set for February 2026, while State Congresses will take place in March leading up to the national event. These steps are aimed at ensuring broad internal participation and compliance with the PDP Constitution and relevant regulations.

The party leadership directed the National Caretaker Committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees and begin full logistical and administrative preparations, including issuing guidelines and notices for all congresses ahead of the March convention. NEC emphasised that all arrangements must comply with the PDP Constitution and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requirements.

NEC also welcomed a recent Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan that recognised its leadership structure and directed INEC to acknowledge the caretaker committee pending the convention. The party’s leaders underscored their commitment to the rule of law, urging all members to act in accordance with court decisions and established constitutional frameworks.

In closing, the NEC called on PDP members nationwide to remain united, disciplined, and loyal to the party’s ideals, placing collective interests above individual ambitions. Leaders expressed confidence that the convention and preceding congresses would strengthen internal democracy, restore stability, and position the party for future electoral competitiveness.
