Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed confidence that his side can significantly reduce the gap to newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool next season.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Maresca acknowledged the progress his team has made and the challenges that remain. Chelsea, currently fifth in the table and 22 points behind the leaders, were only two points adrift of Liverpool in mid-December, shortly after a narrow 2-1 defeat at Anfield.
“We’re clearly behind right now, but I believe we’re moving in the right direction,” Maresca said. “The key difference is their consistency and experience—players who know how to win games. That’s what sets them apart.”
Reflecting on Liverpool’s transformation after key signings like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson in 2018, Maresca acknowledged that experience will be crucial if Chelsea is to bridge the gap.
“To compete with clubs like Liverpool, experience is essential,” he noted. “Next season, our squad will naturally improve because we've had another year together. Players like Levi Colwill, for example, are growing into leadership roles.”
Despite the distance between the two sides on the table, Chelsea remains focused on securing a top-five finish and a Champions League spot. The Blues are also on course for the UEFA Conference League final following a commanding 4-1 away win over Djurgarden.
As a mark of respect, Chelsea will give Liverpool a guard of honour before Sunday’s match.

“It’s a tradition that shows respect for what they’ve achieved,” said Maresca. “But more importantly, it serves as motivation—something our players can aspire to replicate one day.”
