Burial of thr slain Oyo Teacher

A slain teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during a deadly attack on schools in Oyo State, has been laid to rest in Ogbomoso amid growing outrage over insecurity affecting schools in the region.

Adegboye, 49, was buried after a funeral service held at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso before his remains were interred at his residence in the Owolake area of the town. Family members, colleagues, religious leaders, and sympathisers gathered to mourn the late teacher, whose death has sparked grief across the state.

The deceased lost his life after armed bandits reportedly attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele, located within Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. During the assault, several teachers and students were abducted, throwing surrounding communities into panic.

In response to the incident, the Oyo State Government announced the immediate suspension of all school field trips, excursions, and external educational activities pending a comprehensive security review.

The decision is aimed at strengthening student safety and preventing schools from becoming vulnerable targets amid rising insecurity concerns.

The killing of Adegboye has also triggered emotional protests and calls for improved protection for teachers and students across Oyo State. Videos circulating online showed groups of teachers demanding urgent government intervention and better security arrangements for schools in rural communities.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed the attack and condemned the killing, promising intensified efforts to rescue abducted victims and improve security operations in affected areas.

The tragedy has reignited national conversations around the growing threat posed by attacks on educational institutions in Nigeria, especially in vulnerable rural communities where schools often lack adequate security infrastructure.

Education stakeholders and civil society groups have continued to urge both federal and state governments to prioritize school protection policies, emergency response systems, and intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks on students and teachers.
