The University of Benin Teaching Hospital community rolled out the drums in honour of Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti after his emergence as the new President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), marking what many described as a defining moment for Edo State’s medical community and Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The celebratory dinner, hosted by the management and associates of the teaching hospital, gathered medical professionals, academics, healthcare stakeholders, and dignitaries who praised Prof. Omoti’s decades-long contributions to medicine, leadership, and healthcare advocacy.
Omoti’s Emergence Celebrated Across Edo Medical Community
Prof. Omoti’s election victory has continued to attract widespread commendation from medical practitioners and political leaders across the country. The renowned ophthalmologist secured victory during the NMA Annual Delegates Conference held in Kano, defeating his closest rival with a commanding number of votes.
Members of the Edo medical community described his emergence as a reward for years of dedication, professionalism, and service to humanity.
The Edo State chapter of the NMA had earlier hailed the development as “a historic and defining moment” for the association, noting that Omoti’s leadership experience and integrity positioned him to steer the association into a new era.
A Distinguished Career in Medicine and Leadership
Prof. Omoti, a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at University of Benin Teaching Hospital, is widely respected within Nigeria’s medical landscape.
Over the years, he has held several strategic positions, including:
- Former Chairman of NMA Edo State
- Former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), UBTH chapter
- Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee
According to reports, he also boasts more than 140 scientific publications and has participated in numerous international medical conferences.
Focus on Healthcare Reforms and Doctors’ Welfare
Following his election, Prof. Omoti pledged to prioritize reforms within the Nigerian healthcare system, improve doctors’ welfare, and strengthen unity among medical practitioners nationwide.
Stakeholders at the dinner expressed confidence that his administration would tackle key challenges confronting the medical profession, including:
