Tinubu and Atiku

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised Atiku Abubakar, saying the former vice president failed Nigerians during his time in office. Tinubu made the remarks while addressing members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Abuja, amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The President said those positioning themselves as leaders of the opposition lacked the credibility to criticise his administration, noting that one of them had previously overseen key national economic processes without delivering expected results.

Although he did not mention Atiku by name, the comments were widely interpreted as directed at the former vice president, who served between 1999 and 2007 and chaired Nigeria’s privatisation council during that period.Tinubu also declared that he would not be intimidated by opposition alliances forming ahead of the next election cycle, insisting that governance would not be derailed by political pressure.

“They want to scare me off? It’s a lie,” the President said, reaffirming his resolve to continue with ongoing reforms.

The remarks come as opposition figures, including Atiku, intensify efforts to build coalitions under platforms such as the African Democratic Congress in preparation for the 2027 elections.

The exchange signals an early escalation of political rhetoric, with both the ruling party and opposition positioning themselves for a highly contested electoral cycle. Analysts say the renewed war of words reflects shifting alliances and increasing scrutiny of past leadership records, as political actors seek to shape public perception ahead of the polls.
