Former Governor Ikpeazu’s Silence is causing Political Jitters Across Abia State —Apolos
A former aide to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Enyinnaya Apolos, says the former governor’s enduring political relevance continues to unsettle camps across Abia State despite his deliberate withdrawal from the spotlight.
In a statement released by Apolos, he described Dr. Ikpeazu as “an unassuming enigma,” whose calm demeanor and quiet nature have consistently been misread as political weakness. He noted that Ikpeazu remains a powerful and strategic force whose influence lingers even after completing his constitutionally allowed eight years as governor.
“He no longer seeks the spotlight, but somehow, the spotlight refuses to leave him,” Apolos said.
According to him, Ikpeazu made history as the first governor in Abia State to serve under a single political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with one deputy throughout his two terms, choosing loyalty over political convenience.
Apolos stated that since leaving office, Ikpeazu has carried himself with humility, now engaging in national and international matters with dignity, despite continued efforts by political neophytes and opportunists to drag his name into every controversy.
“He is the most misunderstood, the most insulted, yet the most forgiving,” the statement read. “His presence, or even his silence, remains a source of discomfort for many. He is politically unpredictable, yet strategically grounded.”
Apolos further recalled a recent visit by Ukwa-La-Ngwa stakeholders, during which Ikpeazu reportedly said he bore no personal or political grudge over the outcome of the 2023 elections. He quoted Ikpeazu as saying, “The mark of a good leader is to ensure that both the vessel and the people are safe as you take them to shore.”
The statement suggested that while Ikpeazu’s senatorial loss and his preferred successor’s defeat have been used to discredit him, those who underperformed at their polling units still blame the former governor because “his shadow looms large over Abia politics.”
He accused the current Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, of remaining fixated on Ikpeazu, claiming that “nearly every policy or speech feels like a response to a man who is no longer on the ballot.”
As 2027 draws closer, Apolos said political players have begun watching Ikpeazu’s every move or silence as a cue for their next steps, alleging that a recent thank-you visit by some former appointees has already triggered fresh speculations.
“Some claim he’s heading to the APC, others say President Tinubu is recruiting him, and yet others believe the G-5 is plotting a comeback. But the truth is, Dr. Ikpeazu is right where he wants to be—calm, strategic, and focused,” Apolos wrote.
He concluded by describing Ikpeazu as a man with grace, resilience, and political depth—qualities he said are rare in today’s leadership.
“When the time is right, he will act. Until then, let the anxious lose sleep and the schemers whisper,” Apolos declared.
