The Academic Staff Union of Universities has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, made the announcement during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi, warning that failure to comply could trigger a fresh industrial crisis.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum… Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna said.

The new salary framework was agreed upon in December 2025 after prolonged negotiations, with implementation scheduled to begin in January 2026. However, delays by the government have reignited tensions between both parties.

ASUU has repeatedly accused the government of failing to honour agreements, a pattern that has historically led to strikes and disruptions across Nigeria’s public university system.

The latest ultimatum adds to growing labour unrest within the public sector, with concerns mounting over wage implementation and welfare issues affecting workers nationwide.

Observers warn that if the government fails to act within the stipulated timeframe, Nigeria’s already fragile academic calendar could face another major disruption.
