The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has disowned the controversial installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo” in East London, South Africa, declaring the title illegal and unrecognised.

In a statement, the group said the purported coronation lacks legal backing and does not conform to established Igbo traditional institutions.

The development has triggered tension in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, where protests reportedly turned violent, leading to the destruction of vehicles and looting of foreign-owned businesses.

Ohanaeze condemned the unrest, describing attacks on innocent persons and property as unacceptable, while urging authorities to restore order and prevent further escalation.

The group reiterated that it does not recognise the conferment of “Eze Ndigbo” titles outside Igbo land, aligning with the position of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s South-East.

It advised Igbo communities in the diaspora to adopt alternative leadership structures, such as community coordinators, rather than monarchy-style titles that could create misunderstandings in host countries.

Ohanaeze also called for restraint among all parties, urging both Nigerians and South Africans to embrace peaceful coexistence amid rising tensions linked to the controversy.
