Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared himself the most viable presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, taking a swipe at leading political figures whom he described as “ethnic champions.” Amaechi said his major distinction from other contenders lies in what he termed a national outlook, arguing that Nigeria’s leadership challenge requires a candidate capable of transcending ethnic and regional sentiments.

The former Rivers State governor criticised key political actors, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party figure Peter Obi, suggesting their political appeal is largely rooted in ethnic support bases.

Speaking at a gathering of the African Democratic Congress, Amaechi urged party members to prioritise competence and national acceptance over ethnic or religious considerations when selecting a presidential candidate. He warned that reliance on identity politics could weaken the opposition’s chances of mounting a credible challenge in 2027, stressing the need for unity and strategic coalition building.

Amaechi, who previously contested for the presidency under the APC in 2023, is widely seen as one of several figures positioning for a potential run in 2027. His latest remarks signal an intensifying contest within opposition circles, particularly within the ADC, where efforts are ongoing to build a coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.

Analysts say the comments reflect early jostling for political dominance ahead of the next election cycle, with aspirants seeking to define their strengths and differentiate themselves from rivals. They also highlight a broader debate within Nigeria’s political space over the role of ethnicity and national appeal in leadership selection.

As coalition talks deepen, Amaechi’s stance may shape internal party dynamics and influence the emergence of a consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
