Mascot Uzor Kalu

Abia State APC governorship aspirant Mascot Uzor Kalu has issued a strongly worded public warning against what he describes as a calculated plot by the party’s State Working Committee to use a stakeholders’ gathering in Umuahia on Saturday, April 12, 2026, to secretly foist a preferred candidate on the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

In a statement made available to journalists, Kalu said his attention had been drawn to a so-called stakeholders’ meeting being convened in Umuahia, where APC State Executive members, Local Government Area Chairmen, and other selectively invited party stakeholders were reportedly directed to mobilise 20 persons per ward with the meeting publicly framed as being about the presidential campaign for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Kalu, credible intelligence available to him suggests the gathering is nothing more than a premeditated scheme to push through a consensus endorsement of a particular aspirant under the cover of a Tinubu campaign meeting.

He described any such arrangement as fundamentally illegitimate. “Any premeditated consensus arrangement orchestrated by the APC State Working Committee and stakeholders, without the participation of all aspirants contesting for the same position, is illegitimate, unacceptable, and null and void ab initio. Such an imposition will be met with stiff and unequivocal resistance,” Kalu declared.

The aspirant called out the Abia APC SWC directly, reminding its members that they were elected to uphold internal democracy, fairness, and due process — not to serve as instruments of any individual’s political ambition. He warned that the era of backdoor arrangements and political coercion was over and that the party’s integrity would not be sacrificed on the altar of narrow interests.

“The APC in Abia must not be reduced to a tool for personal ambition or manipulated to serve narrow interests. Party executives were elected to uphold fairness, internal democracy, and due process, not to act as agents of endorsement for any individual,” he stated.

Kalu also addressed what he described as pressure on aspirants to step down, declaring that no level of intimidation would compel him to abandon his gubernatorial ambition. “Every Abian has the constitutional right to run for any political office they deem fit. We shall not be cajoled into believing that one individual, who is not prepared to run for office, is now the anointed candidate,” he said.

He issued a direct caution to members of the APC SWC to stay away from pro-group meetings convened by any aspirant, warning that any attempt to subvert the party’s internal democratic processes would face strong challenge.

The statement adds a fresh layer of tension to what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested APC governorship primary season in Abia State, where the opposition party is seeking to unseat incumbent Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party in 2027.
