Ben Kalu addressing supporters in Bende

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has hinted at a possible bid for the Abia State governorship in 2027, stating that he has already selected a venue where he will formally respond to calls urging him to contest.

Mr Kalu’s latest remarks come amid increasing pressure from political groups and stakeholders who have continued to push for his entry into the race.

While he stopped short of making an outright declaration, the lawmaker suggested that a definitive statement on his ambition would be made at the appropriate time and place, signalling that consultations are ongoing.

The development marks a shift from his earlier position in which he downplayed governorship speculation, insisting that his immediate focus remained governance and delivering constituency projects.

In recent weeks, support groups, particularly among youth organisations in the South-East, have openly called on Mr Kalu to join the race, citing his leadership profile and influence within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Observers say his potential entry into the contest could significantly reshape the political landscape in Abia State, where early permutations for the 2027 elections are already gathering momentum.

Although no timeline has been given for the anticipated declaration, Mr Kalu’s comments suggest that political calculations within the APC and broader regional alignments will play a decisive role in his final decision.

The unfolding developments underscore the intensifying jostle for power ahead of 2027, as key actors position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship race in Abia State.
