The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a stern warning to media houses against biased reporting, intimidation of guests, and other violations of broadcast ethics as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

In a formal notice to broadcasters, the commission expressed concern over a rising trend of breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in news, current affairs, and political programmes.

The NBC said some presenters and programme anchors have departed from professional standards by expressing personal opinions as facts, denying fair hearing to opposing views, and engaging in conduct that compromises neutrality. It specifically warned against the intimidation or bullying of guests during live programmes, noting that such actions constitute a violation of the code and could attract sanctions.

According to the regulator, any presenter found guilty of imposing personal views, intimidating guests, or failing to maintain balance would be classified under a “Class B breach,” which carries disciplinary consequences. The commission also stressed that editorial responsibility lies solely with broadcasters and cannot be transferred to guests, even during unscripted live discussions.

Raising further concerns, the NBC noted that some media platforms are increasingly being used to disseminate inflammatory and divisive content capable of undermining national unity. It warned that such broadcasts would not be tolerated and would attract regulatory action. As political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the commission urged media organisations to uphold accuracy, fairness, and professionalism, insisting that compliance with the broadcasting code is mandatory.

The NBC reiterated that the airwaves must serve as channels for credible information and national cohesion, rather than tools for misinformation or political manipulation.
