A Russian-born gunman killed at least six people and injured more than a dozen others in a deadly shooting spree in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, in an incident authorities are investigating as a possible act of terrorism.

The attack occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, where the suspect opened fire on civilians in the street before barricading himself inside a supermarket and taking hostages. Ukrainian security forces later stormed the building and shot the gunman dead after negotiations failed.

Officials confirmed that six people were killed in the attack, including victims shot on the street and at least one hostage inside the supermarket. More than 14 others sustained injuries, among them a 12-year-old child whose parents were also reportedly killed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as a tragedy and said authorities are working to determine the motive behind the attack. The country’s security service has classified the shooting as a potential terrorist act.

Investigators revealed that the suspect, a 58-year-old man born in Moscow, had a criminal record and had previously lived in conflict-affected regions of eastern Ukraine. Reports also indicate that he set fire to his apartment before launching the attack.

Mass shootings of this scale are rare in Kyiv, a city more accustomed to missile and drone attacks amid the ongoing war. The incident has heightened concerns about internal security and the psychological toll of prolonged conflict on residents.

Authorities say a full investigation is underway, with efforts focused on uncovering possible links, motives, and any wider security implications of the attack.
