The Delta State Police Command has arrested a police officer filmed allegedly executing a handcuffed man in Effurun, Delta State, after a disturbing video of the incident went viral on social media.

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, identifying the officer as ASP Nuhu Usman. He said the officer has been taken into custody and transferred to the state headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary proceedings.

According to reports, the victim was surrounded by armed officers attached to the Effurun Division when the shooting occurred. In the footage, the handcuffed man was heard pleading with the operatives, saying he would reveal everything he knew. Moments later, he was allegedly shot by the officer leading the team.

Police authorities said the action violated Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, both of which regulate the use of firearms and treatment of suspects.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, reportedly ordered the immediate arrest of the officer after learning of the incident, promising that due process would be followed.

The case has reignited concerns over police brutality, extortion and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria, despite repeated promises of reform and internal sanctions against erring officers.
