Joash Amupitan, INEC Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections in Ondo, Enugu, Rivers, and Nasarawa states to fill vacant legislative seats.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the date during a briefing in Abuja, noting that the elections would be conducted simultaneously with the Ekiti State governorship poll.

According to the commission, the bye-elections will cover vacant senatorial seats in the affected states, arising from resignations, appointments, or other developments that created representation gaps in the National Assembly.

The commission explained that conducting the polls alongside the Ekiti governorship election is part of efforts to optimise logistics, reduce costs, and ensure efficient deployment of electoral personnel and materials.

INEC also indicated that additional bye-elections would take place in other states, including a House of Representatives seat in Kano and a State Assembly seat in Kebbi, bringing the total number of affected constituencies to six.

The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to credible polls, assuring stakeholders that preparations are underway to ensure transparency and compliance with electoral laws.

The upcoming elections are expected to fill critical legislative vacancies and restore full representation to the affected constituencies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
