Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing deepening internal crises and what he described as a “toxic” political environment.

Obi disclosed his decision in a statement shared on his social media platform, explaining that his exit followed careful reflection on the direction of the party and the broader Nigerian political landscape.

He noted that persistent internal conflicts within the ADC, coupled with external pressures, made it increasingly difficult to remain in the party, adding that the situation was beginning to mirror challenges that led to his earlier exit from the Labour Party.

According to him, the decision was not driven by personal grievances against party leaders but by a desire to maintain his principles and political ideals in a system he described as increasingly hostile.

Obi had joined the ADC in late 2025 as part of a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.

His latest move comes amid growing uncertainty within the ADC, where internal disputes, leadership tussles, and realignment talks have continued to shape the party’s direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political observers say Obi’s exit could significantly impact opposition dynamics, particularly as discussions intensify around the formation of new political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
