Former Borno State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, has predicted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, will rejoin the PDP and contest for president in 2027 under its banner.
Sheriff made this claim during an interview on Politics Today, a political program on Channels Television, on Monday.
Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, left the PDP on May 25, 2022, just days before the party’s presidential primary. At the time, Obi cited “recent developments in the party” that he said were not conducive to “constructive engagement and contributions.” Two days later, on May 27, he joined the Labour Party and went on to become its presidential flagbearer in the 2023 election, where he finished third.
Sheriff: ‘Obi Will Run Under PDP in 2027’
During the interview, Sheriff confidently stated that Obi’s political future lies with the PDP, not with his current coalition.

“From the information available to me, Peter Obi will soon return to the PDP and contest for the presidency on the party’s platform in 2027,” Sheriff declared.
He went on to dismiss the relevance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—a party currently in coalition with Obi—suggesting that it lacks long-term viability. “As far as Nigerian politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give it three months and it will fizzle out,” Sheriff said.
This is not the first sign of attempts to lure Obi back to the PDP. On July 25, Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP, confirmed that consultations and strategic steps were underway to reintegrate Obi into the party.

Obi’s political movements remain a point of intense speculation as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. His potential return to the PDP could significantly reshape the opposition landscape in the years to come.
