The Nigerian Army has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was killed during a security operation in Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of April 25 at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory, when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group responded to a distress call over an armed robbery attack.
According to the Army, the fleeing robbers opened fire on soldiers upon their arrival, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, Jamiu was reportedly caught in the crossfire and later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
In a statement issued by Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, the Guards Brigade described the loss as heartbreaking and said it had cast a deep shadow over officers and soldiers involved in the operation.

Military authorities said the remains of the deceased corps member had been handed over to relevant civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
The Commander of the Guards Brigade also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and others affected by the incident.
The Army further disclosed that a full investigation had been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the killing, promising to review operational procedures aimed at improving civilian safety during security responses.
Residents of the area were urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts continue to tackle criminal activity within the Federal Capital Territory.
