England and Ghana edged closer to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after battling to a goalless draw in their Group L encounter in Foxborough.
The result leaves both teams on four points after two matches, with England remaining top of the group on goal difference ahead of Ghana. A positive result in their final group fixtures could be enough to secure progression to the knockout stages.
Having opened their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia, England entered the match as favourites but struggled to break down a disciplined Ghanaian defence. The Black Stars adopted a compact approach that frustrated Thomas Tuchel’s side throughout the contest.
Despite dominating possession, England created few clear-cut opportunities. Ghana remained organized at the back and looked dangerous on the counterattack, ensuring the European side found little space in the final third.
The game’s biggest chance arrived late on when Nico O’Reilly struck the crossbar with a header before England captain Harry Kane fired the rebound over the bar from close range. The miss denied England a victory that would have guaranteed their place in the knockout rounds.
Ghana also had moments to trouble England and felt they had a strong penalty appeal turned down in the second half. Their defensive resilience, however, proved enough to earn a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.
With one group match remaining, England and Ghana remain firmly in control of their qualification hopes. England will face Panama in their final group game, while Ghana takes on Croatia in a fixture that could determine the final standings in Group L.
