The Aba Sports Journalists (ASJ) suffered a 4-2 defeat to the Abia State Referees Council in an entertaining friendly match played at Enyimba Stadium, Aba, on Monday.

The referees got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the 8th minute before doubling their advantage ten minutes later to put the journalists under early pressure.

Things went from bad to worse for ASJ when the referees were awarded a penalty midway through the contest. The spot-kick was clinically converted to make it 3-0 and leave the journalists with a mountain to climb.

However, ASJ showed signs of resilience when Benefits Ikpeazu found the back of the net to reduce the deficit and spark hopes of a comeback. Those hopes were short-lived as the referees were awarded a second penalty, which was calmly dispatched after sending ASJ goalkeeper Danfa Godwin the wrong way.

Substitute Kingsley Woke added a touch of quality to the contest with a delightful finish just four minutes after coming on, reducing the scoreline to 4-2. Despite their spirited efforts, the journalists were unable to mount a full comeback as the referees held on for victory.

The result means the Aba Sports Journalists will continue their quest for a maiden victory, while the Abia State Referees Council celebrated an impressive performance.
