A Lagos court has convicted and sentenced 13 individuals for offences related to illegal waste disposal, reinforcing the state’s ongoing crackdown on environmental violations.
The convictions followed a series of enforcement operations targeting individuals accused of indiscriminate refuse dumping and other environmental infractions across different parts of the state. Authorities said the offenders were prosecuted as part of efforts to promote cleaner surroundings and discourage practices that contribute to environmental degradation.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly warned residents and businesses against illegal waste disposal, stressing that offenders will face prosecution under existing environmental laws.
Officials noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse poses serious health and environmental risks, including blocked drainage channels, flooding, and the spread of diseases. The government therefore urged residents to adopt proper waste management practices and patronize approved waste collection operators.
Environmental authorities described the convictions as a clear signal that the state remains committed to enforcing sanitation regulations and maintaining a cleaner environment for residents.
The latest court ruling comes amid intensified efforts by environmental agencies to tackle waste-related offences and improve public compliance with sanitation laws across Lagos.
