Ex south East Governors

Former governors from Nigeria’s South-East region have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office, signalling a deepening political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement, delivered under the platform of a newly formed forum of ex-governors, underscores a broader shift within the region towards collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move mirrors earlier positions taken by APC stakeholders and sitting governors in the zone, who had pledged to mobilise support and consolidate votes for Mr Tinubu’s re-election.

At a recent stakeholders’ engagement, leaders from the region argued that sustained alignment with the federal government would strengthen the South-East’s political bargaining power and attract more development projects.

Prominent figures at similar gatherings have emphasised that the region’s relatively low electoral contribution in the 2023 presidential election weakened its national influence, a situation they say must be corrected ahead of 2027.

The endorsement also comes amid growing calls within the APC for unity across geopolitical zones, with party leaders warning against fragmented voting patterns that could diminish regional relevance at the centre.

Supporters of the president point to ongoing economic reforms, infrastructure projects, and policy initiatives as justification for backing his re-election bid.

However, the development is expected to stir political debate in the South-East, where opposition parties and other interest groups continue to mobilise support for alternative platforms.

As early permutations for 2027 gather momentum, the latest endorsement highlights the intensifying contest for influence and alignment across Nigeria’s political landscape.
