Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his determination to honour what he described as the “social contract” with residents, insisting that governance and service delivery remain his administration’s top priority. Fubara made the pledge on Wednesday during an inspection of internal road rehabilitation and a proposed modern market site in the old Port Harcourt township.

Addressing reporters at the Creek Road Market site, the governor said that despite political headwinds, his administration would remain focused on responding to the trust placed in it by the electorate. He emphasised that the government’s responsibility is to translate public confidence into purposeful and sustained leadership for the benefit of the people of Rivers State.

Fubara noted that the road works and market project are central to restoring the township’s infrastructure and boosting economic activity. He highlighted that relocating street traders into a structured market environment would improve traffic flow and enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal, signalling a broader push to revitalise urban spaces.

The governor disclosed that construction on the Creek Road Market is slated to begin within a week, underscoring his administration’s intent to accelerate key developmental projects. His comments come against the backdrop of persistent political friction within the state, including efforts by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings and lingering disputes with political rivals.

Political observers say Fubara’s continued emphasis on social and infrastructure delivery is aimed at reasserting his leadership amid challenges that have, at times, slowed governance. Critics argue that sustained political tensions including past emergency rule and ongoing legislative pushbacks have tested the resilience of state institutions.

Nevertheless, Fubara’s commitment to his “social contract” message reflects a broader appeal to residents to remain patient and united as his government pursues developmental goals. The state leadership continues to advocate dialogue and stability as means to overcome political divides and keep Rivers State on a growth trajectory. Source: Sahara Reporters.
