Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has confirmed that 82 worshippers abducted during a violent attack on January 18 in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area, have been safely returned and are currently receiving care in Kaduna’s Women and Children Shelter. The governor made the announcement during a visit to check on the returning victims, who are undergoing medical and psychosocial support.

The victims among hundreds initially reported kidnapped from three churches in the community — were described by the governor as traumatised but grateful to be back on home soil. Sani offered condolences to the survivors and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rescuing all those still held by the bandits, promising that intensive efforts would continue until every remaining abductee is released.

Authorities have emphasised collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safe recovery of the captives, urging residents to assist with actionable information that could hasten operations. Sani also commended the swift response of security forces, underscoring that restoring peace and safety in troubled areas remains a top priority for the state government.

The January attack which reportedly saw 177 worshippers abducted from Kurmin Wali drew national attention and spurred criticism over initial denials by some officials before security forces and community leaders confirmed the abductions and began active rescue efforts. The ongoing situation continues to highlight persistent security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria.
