Panic and fear gripped Ekwulobia in Anambra State in the early hours of today as unknown gunmen launched a deadly attack, reportedly killing at least six operatives of the state’s joint security outfit, Operation Udo-Gachi, also known as Agunechemba. The assault began around 7:30 a.m. and was marked by over 30 minutes of intense gunfire.

Eyewitnesses say the attackers torched a Toyota Sienna van believed to be carrying the operatives, with viral videos showing burning vehicles and bodies, though the authenticity and casualty figures remain unconfirmed. As of press time, no official statement has been released by the police or Anambra State authorities.

The attack comes amid a backdrop of rising insecurity in the Southeast and growing criticism of Operation Udo-Gachi, which was launched in January to combat violent crime but has faced allegations of extortion and rights abuses.

Analysts warn that state-backed security units may increasingly become targets for retaliation if transparency and reform are not prioritized.
