The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party, with the recognised faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Checks on INEC’s website on Monday showed Mohammed listed as the PDP National Chairman, alongside other members of the party’s national leadership.

Also recognised is Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, along with other key officials elected during the party’s recent national convention.

The convention, which held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, produced the new leadership through a process involving over 2,000 delegates from across the 36 states.

The move by INEC is expected to further intensify the internal crisis within the PDP, which is currently divided into rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership structure.

A separate faction within the party had earlier challenged the legitimacy of the convention, even seeking legal intervention to stop the exercise.

Despite ongoing disputes, the recognition by the electoral umpire signals a significant development in the battle for control of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
