The Labour Party has announced the indefinite suspension of six high-profile members, including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, following investigations into alleged anti-party activities.
In a statement released by the party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the decision was ratified during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 7, 2025. This comes after the submission of a report by a five-member Disciplinary Committee set up on May 2 to investigate alleged misconduct.
Those suspended from the party, effective immediately, include:
- Dr. Alex Otti – Governor of Abia State
- Senator Ireti Kingibe
- Senator Darlington Nwokocha
- Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
- Hon. Amobi Ogah
- Hon. Seyi Sowunmi
According to the party, these individuals are no longer authorized to represent or act on behalf of the Labour Party in any capacity. Relevant institutions, including the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies, have been duly notified of this development.
Clarification on Nenadi Usman’s Status
The party also addressed public speculation surrounding former Minister Nenadi Usman, whose name was notably absent from the list of suspended members. The statement clarified that Usman is not a card-carrying member of the Labour Party and, therefore, not subject to internal disciplinary measures. She is instead recognized as a member of the Obidient support movement, which supported the party's 2023 presidential candidate.
Labour Party leadership also criticized Usman's recent political realignment and questioned her credibility, pointing to ongoing corruption allegations and a reported plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The party challenged her to publicly address the forfeiture of assets and ownership of properties in Nigeria and abroad.
On Party Finances and Coalition Talks
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the Labour Party noted that its financial records have been externally audited and cleared by INEC-appointed auditors. The party’s audited accounts, now publicly available, were reportedly commended for their integrity.
The statement concluded with a strong rejection of ongoing proposals for a political coalition or merger. The party emphasized its independence and reiterated its intention to contest the 2027 general elections as a standalone political entity.

“We will not engage in any coalition talks with individuals or groups lacking the character, competence, or capacity to manage such arrangements,” the statement read.
Signed:
Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim
National Secretary, Labour Party
