Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has appealed to the kidnappers holding abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State to release them and reunite them with their families.
Obi made the appeal while reacting to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has generated widespread concern across the country.
Describing the development as heartbreaking and unacceptable, Obi urged the abductors to show compassion and remorse by releasing the victims unharmed. He emphasized that children and teachers should never become targets of violence or criminal activities under any circumstances.
According to him, the continued captivity of innocent pupils and educators has inflicted severe emotional pain on parents, guardians, and affected communities who have endured days of uncertainty and anxiety.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that protecting children and ensuring access to safe education must remain a national priority. He noted that attacks on schools threaten the future of the country and undermine efforts to improve educational development.
Obi also called on security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the safe return of all those still in captivity. He urged government at all levels to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The abduction has renewed concerns about insecurity in parts of the country, particularly attacks targeting schools and educational institutions. Stakeholders have continued to call for urgent measures to protect learners and teachers from criminal elements.
Many parents and residents have expressed fears over the safety of students, while education advocates warn that persistent attacks on schools could discourage enrolment and disrupt learning activities.
Obi reiterated that every child deserves to learn in a safe environment free from fear and intimidation. He appealed to all those involved in the abduction to consider the suffering of the families and allow the victims to return home safely.
His intervention adds to growing calls from political leaders, community stakeholders, religious organizations, and civil society groups demanding the immediate release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
