The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has ruled out the possibility of negotiating with kidnappers through ransom payments or the provision of weapons, insisting that the government must not encourage criminality in its efforts to secure the release of abducted pupils and teachers.
Speaking amid growing concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and educators in Oriire Local Government Area, the Speaker emphasized that authorities would continue to pursue lawful and strategic measures to ensure the safe return of the victims.
Ogundoyin argued that yielding to the demands of kidnappers could embolden criminal groups and worsen the security challenges facing the country. He maintained that government actions must prioritize long-term security interests while protecting innocent lives.
The lawmaker also called for a review and strengthening of existing laws to provide tougher penalties for kidnapping, terrorism, and related crimes. According to him, stronger legal frameworks would serve as a deterrent and help reduce the growing threat posed by criminal elements.
He stressed that the safety and welfare of schoolchildren, teachers, and residents remain a top priority for the state government and security agencies. He further urged security operatives to intensify efforts to rescue those still in captivity and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The abduction has sparked widespread outrage across Oyo State and beyond, with parents, teachers, and community leaders demanding urgent action to secure the release of the victims. The incident has also renewed concerns about the safety of schools and learning environments in vulnerable communities.
Ogundoyin expressed solidarity with the affected families and assured them that government institutions would continue to work closely with security agencies to achieve a positive outcome.
He noted that beyond rescue efforts, there is a need for sustained investments in security infrastructure, intelligence gathering, and community policing to prevent future attacks on schools and rural communities.
The Speaker’s comments come amid increasing calls for stronger national action against kidnapping and terrorism, as stakeholders continue to advocate comprehensive measures to address insecurity and protect citizens across the country.
