In a powerful show of unity and political reaffirmation, leaders and stakeholders from the Ukwa La Ngwa bloc of Abia State converged at the Umuobiakwa residence of former Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu. The gathering, which drew prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and community figures, was more than ceremonial, it was a decisive call for renewed leadership.
Leading the delegation, veteran political figure and elder statesman Sir Don Ubani described Dr. Ikpeazu’s time in office as a turning point in the political history of Ukwa La Ngwa people, who had long faced exclusion from the state’s top leadership. He said the former governor broke the jinx of over 40 years during which no one from Ukwa La Ngwa, either in old Imo State or Abia, had served as governor.

“Through humility and tenacity of purpose, you were able to break the jinx of over 40 years during which no one from Ukwa La Ngwa, either in old Imo State or Abia, had served as governor.” Sir Ubani said
Sir Ubani highlighted how Ikpeazu’s administration emphasized grassroots inclusion and human capital development. He noted that the appointment of over 10,000 Special Assistants from across the state was a deliberate strategy to fight poverty and stimulate microeconomic activity.

“You had more than 10,000 Special Assistants from across the state, and that was a strategic approach to fighting poverty. It helped to boost the local economy and empowered women and petty traders to start small enterprises initiatives that are now sadly missing.” Sir Don Ubani stated.
Beyond economic empowerment, the stakeholders praised the transparency and integrity that defined Ikpeazu’s leadership. Ubani observed that there was hardly anyone who served in Dr Okezie Ikpeazu’s government that didn’t go home with a vehicle, a gesture that, in his view, helped curb corruption by easing the personal burdens of public office holders.

Reflecting on the strategic relevance of the Ukwa La Ngwa region, which spans nine(9) out of Abia’s seventeen local government areas, Sir Ubani stressed that the area remains central to the state’s commerce, trade, and oil economy. Yet, despite this, “we have often been overlooked.” he lamented

The mood at the meeting shifted from reflection to mobilization as the stakeholders issued a strong call for Dr. Ikpeazu to once again assume a leading role not just within Abia, but potentially at the national level.
“We don’t have an alternative, You are our leader, our flagship, our road map. Wherever you lead, we will follow.” Sir Don Ubani stated
Dr. Ikpeazu, visibly touched by the visit, admitted he was caught off guard by the gathering.

“It was indeed a surprise event today, But it is okay that your people, from time to time, come to reassure you of their support and faith in what you do.” he said.
Addressing concerns about marginalization under the current political climate, Ikpeazu expressed empathy for the rising frustrations among his people.
“There seems to be a direct attack on the poor and the downtrodden in our state, Every leader in our various jurisdictions is beginning to feel the agitation of the people.” he noted.
With clarity and resolve, he accepted the call to return to leadership saying he has no option but to rise to the plate, adding that his approach would be “
constructive, strategic, and forward-looking while underscoring the essence of collective progress
“The mark of a good leader is ensuring both the vessel and the people are safe, you arrive at the shore together, not alone.” Dr Okezie said.
Calling for unity and coordinated advocacy, Dr. Ikpeazu emphasized that the strength of Ukwa La Ngwa lies in their ability to speak with one voice.

“Hunger has no local government, and disease has no tribe, Recognition and respect must transcend parochial interests if we are to make progress.” he warned.
He also addressed the political shifts of 2023, describing them not as personal setbacks but as a derailment of the collective agenda. He said those who didn’t align with the vision simply didn’t see the light at that time, but promised to put the past behind us and forge a common goal.
“If your vision is strong and you have the support of God, you will succeed.” He added

As the event concluded, one sentiment was undeniable: this was not merely a celebration of past accomplishments but a strategic endorsement for future leadership. With the full backing of Ukwa La Ngwa stakeholders and a renewed mandate to lead, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu’s political journey is far from over, it is, in fact, entering a critical new chapter.
