Nigeria’s Federal Government has confirmed deepening security cooperation with the United States following reports of American military involvement in counter-terrorism operations across parts of the country. The development comes amid heightened global attention after reports emerged suggesting a joint security arrangement between the Nigerian government and the administration of former United States President Donald Trump.
Authorities disclosed that the collaboration was part of efforts to intensify the fight against insurgency and extremist violence, particularly activities linked to Islamic State-affiliated groups. Officials maintained that Nigeria played a crucial role in providing intelligence support that guided foreign military operations, describing the initiative as a strategic partnership designed to curb growing terror threats.
Government representatives explained that the partnership resulted in targeted airstrikes against terrorist elements, adding that the operation was executed following high-level diplomatic consultations between both countries. Nigerian officials emphasised that the intervention was carried out with the approval of the nation’s leadership and remained consistent with broader international counter-terrorism cooperation frameworks.
Security authorities further clarified that the presence of American personnel in Nigeria is limited and focused on intelligence gathering, military training, and technical support rather than full-scale combat deployment. United States Africa Command confirmed that a small team of American forces was deployed at Nigeria’s request to provide specialised operational capabilities and enhance intelligence sharing.
The Federal Government also reiterated that national sovereignty remains intact, stressing that foreign troops operate strictly under Nigerian supervision. Officials described the collaboration as a “sovereign decision” aimed at strengthening intelligence operations, improving aerial surveillance, and disrupting terror financing networks without establishing permanent foreign military bases.
Meanwhile, the strengthened security alliance has generated mixed reactions among analysts and civil society observers. While some have welcomed the development as a necessary step to confront escalating insurgency, others have expressed concerns about the implications of foreign military presence on Nigeria’s territorial integrity and long-term security independence.
Despite the debate, government officials insist that the partnership reflects growing diplomatic trust between Nigeria and the United States and remains focused on safeguarding lives and property. Authorities say ongoing collaboration will continue to evolve as both nations seek stronger strategies to counter terrorism and stabilise volatile regions across the country.
