What Happens When a Pope Dies?

The passing of a pope initiates a solemn and structured process within the Roman Catholic Church. From the moment of death to the election of a new pontiff, each step is steeped in tradition, reverence, and protocol.

Day 1: The Pope’s Death

• The Camerlengo (Chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church) formally confirms the pope’s death.
• The Fisherman’s Ring and official papal seal are ceremonially destroyed to prevent misuse or forgery.
• The Sede Vacante (“vacant seat”) begins — marking the period when the See of Peter is without a pope.

Days 1–9: Mourning and Funeral Rites

• The pope’s body lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects.
• A Funeral Mass is held 4 to 6 days after death.
• The Novemdiales — nine days of official mourning — include special Masses and prayers for the repose of the pope’s soul.

Days 1–15 (up to Day 20): Preparing for the Conclave

• All cardinals under the age of 80 (typically around 120) are summoned to Rome.
• General Congregations of cardinals are held daily to manage the Church’s affairs and organize the conclave.
• The Sistine Chapel is prepared: sealed, sanitized, and secured to ensure confidentiality.
• Cardinals are accommodated at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, a Vatican guesthouse.

Days 15–20: The Conclave Begins

• The conclave commences no earlier than 15 days and no later than 20 days after the pope’s death—unless altered by papal decree or early presence of all eligible cardinals.
• Cardinals solemnly process into the Sistine Chapel and swear an oath of secrecy.
• The declaration “Extra omnes” (“everyone out”) is made, and the doors are locked — the voting begins.

The Voting Process

• Up to four ballots per day are cast (two in the morning, two in the afternoon).
• A two-thirds majority is required to elect the new pope.
• After each round, ballots are burned:
• Black smoke signals no decision.
• White smoke signals that a new pope has been chosen.

Once a Pope Is Elected

• The elected cardinal is asked: “Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?”
• Upon acceptance, he chooses a papal name.
• He dons the white papal vestments and appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
