The African Action Congress (AAC) has selected human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as its consensus presidential candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, positioning him once again as the party’s standard-bearer ahead of what is expected to become a highly competitive political cycle.
The decision reinforces Sowore’s long-standing role within the AAC and signals the party’s intention to maintain continuity around its message of political reform, accountability and institutional change. According to reports, Sowore emerged through a consensus process rather than a contested primary, reflecting internal alignment within the party’s leadership and membership ahead of the formal election season.
Sowore, who previously contested Nigeria’s presidential elections in 2019 and 2023 under the AAC platform, confirmed earlier that he intends to return to the ballot in 2027. His political messaging has consistently focused on governance reforms, economic restructuring, anti-corruption measures and expanding political participation beyond Nigeria’s dominant parties.
The AAC’s endorsement also comes at a period of increasing political realignments and coalition discussions across opposition circles ahead of 2027. However, Sowore has repeatedly distanced his party from broad opposition coalition arrangements, insisting that AAC intends to present what he describes as an independent alternative rather than merge into existing political blocs.
Founded in 2018, the African Action Congress has built its identity around youth participation, grassroots mobilisation and systemic political change. While the party remains outside Nigeria’s traditional power structure, its early declaration of a presidential direction may shape conversations within the emerging 2027 political landscape.
Although the formal campaign season remains some distance away, the announcement places Sowore among the earliest political figures publicly aligned with a presidential platform for the next general election cycle
