Israeli police have barred the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass, in what church authorities describe as an unprecedented breach of religious tradition.
The incident occurred on Sunday as the cleric, accompanied by senior church officials, attempted to access the historic site in Jerusalem’s Old City. He was reportedly stopped by security forces and forced to turn back despite plans for a private religious service.
Church officials say the development marks the first time in centuries that top Christian leaders have been prevented from observing Palm Sunday at one of Christianity’s holiest sites.
The Latin Patriarchate condemned the move as a “grave precedent,” warning that it undermines religious freedoms and disregards the sensitivities of millions of Christians worldwide, particularly during Holy Week.
Israeli authorities, however, cited security concerns linked to the ongoing regional conflict, noting that restrictions have been imposed across key religious sites in Jerusalem due to safety risks and limited emergency access in the Old City.
The decision has triggered international backlash, with global leaders and religious figures expressing concern over the implications for freedom of worship. Italy has already moved to summon the Israeli ambassador for clarification, describing the action as unacceptable.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week in the Christian calendar, a period that typically draws thousands of pilgrims to Jerusalem. This year’s observance, however, has been significantly disrupted, with restrictions also affecting Muslim and Jewish religious activities in the city.
The development adds to growing tensions in the region, as security measures tied to the ongoing conflict continue to reshape religious life in one of the world’s most spiritually significant cities.
